My dad was a NYC police officer for over 21 years. He spent those years completely devoted to protecting the people of New York City. All while being a devoted dad to my brother and I. On September 11, 2001, by the Grace of God, my dad was safe at home as he had scheduled PTO. When he heard the news that the towers were hit, he called his Sargeant letting him know he was on his way in. The roads were closed and they told him to stay home until they reopened and when they do he'd be gone for a while. While everyone was fleeing the city to safety, my dad wanted to run in and help. That's the kind of guy he was. He spent months cleaning up the city from debris, helping recover bodies, and even not coming home for weeks at a time. My dad retired in 2017 but shortly after began experiencing health issues related to 9/11. On February 28, 2026, my dad passed away from 9/11 related COPD. He will forever be a NYC hero, forever my hero. We miss him everyday. We are doing this to honor him.
